Recently I wrote a post about how NordVPN helped save the day when I was traveling in Europe. I received a number of comments on that post and a couple of you requested a more detailed post comparing popular VPN services in a few categories — Price, data privacy, Coverage, and Mobile Apps.

I dug into five popular VPN services and compiled the comparison matrix below. For each of these services, I read the privacy policy, terms and conditions, pricing, and features pages. Here are my findings:

Which is the best?

Personally, I use NordVPN and I like it very much. The MacOS and Android apps are very sleek and easy to use, the pricing is decent, and the coverage is great. Will I keep NordVPN? Probably, but after doing this analysis I may have to re-visit that commitment as there are some other cheaper options out there.

If we’re talking pure coverage, ExpressVPN, TorGuard, and NordVPN are neck and neck and all have a substantial presence worldwide.

If you’re concerned first and foremost with price, I’m intrigued by TunnelBear, but also looking more closely at the current deal being offered by NordVPN for two years at $79, which works out to $39.50 annually.

Final Word

I chose to compare these five purely based on your suggestions and my own research. There are undoubtedly some other ones out there, but these five make up the larger majority of what you folks use. If you have any additional questions, I’m happy to do some extra digging.

Which is your favorite VPN service and will you remain loyal after reading this analysis?

Hi Dom,
Interesting articles though I’m wondering if you could post any reviews or ratings you may have on the fastest and best “1-Payment / Lifetime subscription” VPNs?….
Thank you..

I have used NordVPn for the last four years and have never had an issue with them. If you watch, they run a lot of special pricing. In December, I got 3 years for $99.

I also use NordVPN. No problems with it and easy to use. Would recommend. Plus works good in China.

I live in China, arguably one of the toughest markets on VPNs and thus use both ExpressVPN and NordVPN and would recommend the former (ExpressVPN) as its a bit more reliable… though recent additional crackdowns since the lastweektonight episode mean both are almost completely down :'(

I too prefer ExpressVPN. I think they have more Asia servers than any other VPN

Try reviewing Proton VPN. I would like to know your opinion on it.

Hey Dom! Interesting topic here. I’ve been using PIA for about a year and a half. The cost for two years Is $69.95. They do not log your activity either. The only downside is that many sites (Netflix, Southwest, ExpertFlyer) do not allow you to use their site when connected through the VPN.

Hey Dom, Thanks for the review it was really helpful 🙂 Would be amazing if you make a review about new VPN’s. At the moment I use Surfshark and cannot really complain about it. It keeps internet stable as there are not so many people using this VPN. Also, the app is so easy to use, even person who is new to VPN’s could turn it on without any problem. And last aspect why I like this VPN is that it is optimized for fast video content delivery, especially when streaming US Netflix, BBC iPlayer, and from other popular sources.… Read more »
