Attention expats! If you are or were an expat, I would love to hear from you and potentially showcase your story here on the blog! I’ve always been fascinated about the expat life and have even toyed with the idea of moving to a new country myself. I think many people would be interested in hearing your story — which country you moved to, why you decided to move, how you support yourself, etc.

If you’re interested, please comment below or e-mail me at dominic (at) theshortfinal.com …

Conversely, if you have never been an expat, but are interested in hearing the stories of expats, comment or e-mail me on what you would like to know and any questions you may have!

Not an expat, but very interested. Likely to be an expat in retirement.

I’d be interested in the ease of adapting into the new culture (making friends, little conveniences we may take for granted in US) as a resident and maintaining finances while in the other country.

Heading to a wedding in Portugal next month so maybe I’ll just stay there when it ends 😛

But in all seriousness, I may return to Japan since that’s where my heart lives.

Go to Portugal, EU citizens moving there get a 10 year tax exoneration on their foreign income. It is also cheaper than Spain. I have lived in Portugal for just over a year and have no regrets. Low cost of living, nice people, great food and wine and the weather’s great. What more could one ask for?

Not an expat, but we have been discussing the idea and are interested in what people discovered as issues that they did not think of before the move. I have also done some research into it and am wondering how easy/hard it is to get approval to live as an expat. Great idea for an article(s) and looking forward to reading the results!

I’ve been an expat with my husband and two children for about 2 months now in Mexico. I started my own blog, onaroadleadingsomewhere.com, so that I could keep track of everything that we’ve done and the things we’ve encountered. Blogging has been a good outlet for me to vent how I’m feeling about everything. The experience has been overwhelming so far, mostly in positive ways. I would love to share it.

I’m an expat and have been so every since i was a young child. Originally from Canada have been an expat living in: Benin, USA, Tanzania, Mozambique, France, Switzerland, and Ireland, for one year or more.

Its a fascinating and unique lifestyle, but not an easy lifestyle especially for teenagers.

I am an expat living in the Caribbean island of Trinidad and Tobago for 16+ years. I am married to a Trinidadian and my two daughters are Trini too! I moved here from India after I met my ex wife online (Yup – in a chatroom in early 2000). I wanted her to move to India but she didn’t want to. I ended up giving Trinidad a try to see if I would like it here. End result – I fell in love with this island but things didn’t work out too much between me and my ex wife. A… Read more »

I have read your article this Sunday morning reading you would like to hear from expats and to hear our stories. Well! I am one of these guys and my story started eight years ago when I was going through a divorce. I am what you call a British expat, and living in the UK all my life, however when I was going through my divorce and on holly holidays when all my friends and family alwaysed used to come to my home and celebrate. All of a sudden there was no one to be seen, as my brother went… Read more »

I have been an expat twice. I suppose the first time doesn’t really count. We lived in Japan for six years as my husband was in the US Navy. We lived on base so we had very much of an American Experience. These last three years I have spent in Kuwait as a high school math teacher. I would definitely recommend anyone live at least a year abroad. It gives you a whole new perspective on the world. It’s not as big as place as you think it might be. Also I firmly believe if we would all just see… Read more »

I am an expat currently living in Guadalajara, Mexico. I moved from Texas last year and never looked back. Reason for leaving the US was that it was way to expensive to live there. My money goes a lot further in Mexico which means my standard of living is a lot better. Moving to Mexico was way out of my comfort zone, however starvation and Obama care is what compelled me to move. By the way I am a single woman. As far as safety Guadalajara is a lot safer than say Chicago or any other US big city.

I’m contemplating driving to Brazil from Chicago :-). I’m concerned about driving through Mexico, due to the fact it will take me days to get through the country. Any suggestions.

I’m an expat from Woodland Hills, California. Moved to Amsterdam about 8 days ago with my 17 year old daughter. I chose Amsterdam because of its great transportation systems, and ability to travel around Europe and North Africa. I support myself with a pension and rental property income. I am currently working on getting residence permits. I’m open to working… (I’m an urban planner) or perhaps starting a business, maybe an American soul food cafe, or a travel consultant.

You should also try going to the other parts of Africa as well. I found Ethiopia to be extraordinary. The people look a little different, but very friendly just the same.

Nope. The home governments rip apart the expats financially. If they survive that, then the beauracrats (always) or society (sometimes) will insult them whenever they can. It’s a bad life. The days of laid back expat lifestyles are over. For someone like me who cant take insults lying down, its a disaster. If there’s no respect, there’s no fun.

I was an American expat who lived in the Czech Republic from 2003 to 2006. I had gone there to pursue my TEFL Certification to teach English worldwide and to expand my horizons. I loved it there and considered settling there permanently. I had to return to the states due to my family going through long term hardships. Years passed and life happened and am now settled down with a husband and 2 beautiful little ones and still in the US. I would love to have the opportunity to move abroad again because I am uncertain of my family’s future… Read more »

Hey Lauren. I am a newbiew expat so to day ( 1 yr now in Indonesia). Curious to know from a wanderer like you who has travelled across globe, how do you manage the stability of your family, meaning what happens to your spouse’s job/ kids education …….I am sure there is no magic pill for this but would love to hear your side of the story

Lauren

Luckily for me I’m single with no kids — so I don’t struggle with those questions! I know there are several who do it though!
