Every couple of months, American releases a schedule on their cargo website detailing a number of routes that include widebody airplanes both domestically and internationally. This is great because it gives us the opportunity to try premium widebody seats without the international price.

For example, a transcontinental flight from Philadelphia to Los Angeles operated on the A330 costs just 25K AA miles one-way for lie-flat business class seats. The same route to Europe costs 57.5K miles each way. If you don’t have this many miles and still want to try out these seats, you may be in luck. Another option for you would be to purchase a cheap economy ticket and upgrade using miles. Granted, you’ll have to pay 15K miles plus a $75 co-pay but the alternative makes this option worth it.

As of this publishing date, there are just over 30 flight options with domestic widebody aircraft. This schedule will discontinue on June 30th, though many of these routes will be renewed. We just don’t have the schedule yet.

I’ve flown the LAX-DFW dreamliner route. While the upgrade list will be 60+ deep you can book economy and pay to upgrade to premium economy seats (space is limited). Gold’s can still do this at a discount until September when one of their few benefits goes away.
