FINAL UPDATE: American Airlines reached out this afternoon to clarify that the 10% miles rebate is STILL a benefit of the Citi AAdvantage Platinum Select Credit Card and there are no plans to remove it at this time.

Yesterday, reader JRG reached out to me and regarding the 10% redeemed miles rebate that was always on offer with the Citi AAdvantage Platinum Select Credit Card:

I used 57.5K each way to fly SLC to FRA this fall.  With the 10K back in miles, that works out to about 101K for a great trip, and lounge access at DFW as a premium ticket holder.  The new 60K offer is good, but no 10% back on miles.

This was weird, I thought. I had figured we just took the 10% rebate for granted and not thought twice that they pulled it. I decided to do a bit of a deep dive. After looking into the offer page from Citi, I didn’t see the 10% rebate being mentioned anywhere.

Very strange.

Digging a bit deeper, I came across a couple of Reddit threads about this and there seemed to be a bit of confusion as well. Some users said the 10% back is still in existence while others pointed to a FlyerTalk thread suggesting it was gone.

I called Citi to confirm and they deferred me to American for clarification.

I then reached out to Citi on Twitter and got this response:

Not quite the answer I was looking for so I pressed on. This time asking American on Twitter for clarification:

UPDATE 1: I called American and the agent there deferred me to Citibank. Ring around the rosy!

UPDATE 2: American Airlines Twitter assistance offered to look into this for me since the phone agent deferred me to Citi:

Final Word

So there you have it. No more 10% rebate per American. However, a part of me still doesn’t believe them and still thinks your mileage may vary. Interested in any and all data points with this. Of course, if this card doesn’t do it for you, the Barclays AAdvantage Aviator Red card still provides 10% of your miles back.

Have any of you recently received the Citi AAdvantage Platinum Select Card and successfully received 10% of your miles back on redemptions?

can’t possibly be true – i just used the benefit, and AA is advertising it on their homepage – “Redeem Miles and Earn 10% back” is one of the 3 rotating big-banner ads today.

I’ve received the 10% back twice this year (last ticket was booked on May 1st).

They offer this benefit to compete with the United card’s 2 free club passes as the “extra” to the card, in addition to the free checked baggage. It would be stupid to pull it and not replace it with anything.

They’ve definitely removed all mention of the 10% back from the credit card page at:
https://secure.fly.aa.com/citi/ccpage-plat

I wonder if this benefit was quietly removed when Citi implemented the new bonus categories and $100 discount recently

i just booked a ticket last week and have not received the 10% back. also reduced mileage awards are always only shown once/quarter and thus are difficult use if you plan awards in advance of a couple of months (as usually only 1.5 months remain on average); however if you are EXP you can make the change to the new cost without any issue but I do not know if you get that if you are lower status levels (and I’m no longer EXP).

I just renewed personal Citi AAdvantage Platinum Select MC yesterday and when i click on the benefits today in my online account it still shows the 10% miles rebate. I was charged $95 for the renewal (not $99) so perhaps the new $99 version with the added benefits 2xgas, tsa precheck dropped the 10% rebate.

Dom, when American Airlines reached out to you, did they clarify if the 10% still applies to new cardmembers or just to existing cardmembers of Citi AAdvantage Platinum Select? Thanks!
