I’ve seen some questions around the various forums about lounge access at Chicago-O’Hare when flying American internationally. More specifically, Amex Platinum/Priority Pass/Diner’s members want to know whether they have access to a lounge if flying on an American Airlines jet internationally.

Which lounges are available?

Priority Pass

  • Air France / KLM Lounge — Terminal 5
  • Swissport Lounge — Terminal 5

American Express Platinum

  • Air France / KLM Lounge — Terminal 5
  • Swissport Lounge — Terminal 5
  • Delta SkyClub — Terminal 2 (available only when flying Delta)

Diner’s Club

  • Air France / KLM Lounge — Terminal 5
  • Swissport Lounge — Terminal 5

Departure terminal matters!

Terminal 5 at O’Hare is connected to the rest of the terminals via an airside shuttle.

As long as I have an international ticket I should be good right? Wrong, unfortunately.

At O’Hare, American Airlines international flights depart from the domestic Terminal 3. In order to take the airside bus from Terminal 3 to Terminal 5, you’ll need a boarding pass with a Terminal 5 departure on it. Meaning you’d have to be flying an international carrier like Swiss or Air France in order to use the lounge access benefits with Amex Platinum, Priority Pass, and Diners.

So what is the alternative?

  • Purchase a day pass at a lounge that offers them
  • If you’re flying business or first class on an American flight to Asia, Australia, Central America, Europe, Mexico City, New Zealand or South America, you get complimentary Admiral’s Club access.
  • If you’re an Executive Platinum, Platinum Pro or Platinum AAdvantage member and are flying to Asia, Australia, Central America, Europe, Mexico City, New Zealand or South America, you get complimentary Admiral’s Club access regardless of class of service.
  • If you’re a Oneworld Emerald or Sapphire member, you get complimentary Admiral’s Club access regardless of class of service or destination. However, if you’ve earned your Oneworld status through American and are flying on a North American itinerary, you’re out of luck.

This is very timely for my family and I. The other’ airport we find confusing is LAX and the options there when flying Star Alliance. Oneworld is easy–Qantas all the way!
thanks.

“Purchase a day pass at a lounge that offers them”.

And those would be…?

Don’t forget AA now has the Flagship Lounge in T3, which is a huge step up from the regular Admirals Club. First/Business class passengers as well as certain OW elites get access.
